Absolute Inspiration

A few years back Australian Story ran an episode entitled ‘Champion of the World’ about this man

nite tales the movie movie . It was one of the most inspiring stories I have ever seen.

Next week Tony Campolo comes to Perth for a dinner and to speak for his organisation. Danelle and I are going along with a few friends.

The last time I heard Campolo I was front row at the Youth Specialties NYC in San Diego. Fortunately I was out of spitting range!

Sold…

Thanks to E-Bay my old boat is now the property of a bloke from England. His son in law lives over here and will be picking it up.

My ad makes no bones at all about the issues with the boat so after all the angst of ‘what to do’ I feel pretty good about having sold it.

At the end of the day I have lost some money – learnt a lesson and done the right thing by the next bloke

Passive Leadership in Emerging Church?

Justin download rocketman and I have been discussing leadership a little and he pointed me to Leighton’s post. I think he’s on the money. I have added my thoughts over at his place.

“Jordon is back today and invited a bunch of us over for a Bar-B-Q. He started talking about some of the words of challenge he heard from some folks down south. Part of it was that we younger leaders are still waiting for something, some sort of approval to lead. We have been too passive.” Read on… barbie mariposa and her butterfly fairy friends free download sunshine boys the divx

Will I Won’t I?

I have made it a practice to drop in every Friday afternoon at the local tavern, known by the locals as ‘the dump’, ‘the dive’, the bloodbath’ and the ‘shithole’. Very few of them actually like the place – which you would completely understand if you ever saw it – but they still go there because its ‘local’.

Its been 4 months of going there now and I think I really am becoming ‘a regular’. Guys who wouldn’t give me the time of day 2 months back will say ‘g’day’ and include me in their conversations. And on a Friday arvo its often the same guys who front up.

I am making friends and developing relationships – but if I’m honest there are days when I would rather just go straight home on a Friday afternoon. Sometimes it’d be much easier to keep driving and not bother. Today was one of those days. Will I? won’t I?… Will I? won’t I?…

In the end I decided to go. At times I feel like I am doing something that requires some serious effort – its not like hanging out with a few close friends. It really is entering another people group and learning the ropes. That is hard when you are tired, and yet as I remind myself on the drive home, the only way to be a regular is… welll… to be there regularly!

What The?.. II

BoatBlaxellLast week’s boat fiasco left me pretty wary of the whole boat scene – but I’m not one for giving up on something I love that easily!

My old boat now sits in the yard at Hilary’s where they will sell it cheap and inform the buyers of the dangers. I will pocket $3000.00 out of the deal – a loss of $2000.00. I am sitting ok with that now. An expensive lesson, but one that I won’t be learning twice.

It’s funny how things turn out though sometimes. A good mate from SU who I was talking to recently told me how his motor had died on his boat and he was just looking to get rid of an old 17 ft hull. On the day mine died I asked if I could have a look…

This hull sat in the front yard covered in leaves and rubbish but it looked like it had potential” I took it to my fibreglass guy who told me it was a beauty and I ought to snap it up, so I offered him, $1500.00 and all was sorted.

On the weekend we cleaned it up and it looks great. It’s a way better set up than what I had and I am now actually glad everything went pear shaped!!

Today I had the marine mechanic check out a motor I came across thru another guy. They tell me its in tip top condition and I ought to buy it – its an oldie, but in real good nick and only $1000.00 – and I just discovered they will fit it free if I give them the old ‘dead’ motor on the boat.

Nice deal hey?

Total cost is $2500.00 for a boat that should be a real goer. So… strangely, at the end of the day if you do the maths, we sell the old boat for $3000.00 and buy the new one for $2500.00 we are actually $500.00 in front.

I am telling people that at the rate I am going, this time next year I will have a 30 foot boat. In December I bought a 12ft dinghy, then in Jan a 15 ft half cab and now I’ve got a 17 ft runabout”

Actually we might stop there! There’s a pic below of the latest addition. So far I’ve had the ‘Queen Mary’, the ‘Kingswood’ and now the ” ????? ”

I’m not sure yet.

What The?…

Ove the last few weeks I have been writing and speaking with people about possible partnerships with Forge WA.

At times when I am asking for money I feel like a salesman – maybe that is what I am in that setting. So today’s conversation was very refreshing.

I met with a significant Perth leader to discuss a possible partnership with Forge. He was aware of Forge and very supportive. He was also aware of our own mission project in Brighton and we talked quite a bit about it. It turns out he has been planning to speak to the church he is leading about supporting Danelle and I as missionaries… They would support us financially and we would help them by sharing learning and feeding back.

Can’t say any more than that at present as its got some ground to go before being a reality.

But, is that good or what?!download tin cup free hunting party the movie

Adjusting

I am finding I am still very much adjusting to new ways of doing church gatherings.

Tonight was our regular weekly team meeting. Last week we were going to discuss our findings on leadership, but four people were away so we decided to wait until this week. Then this week another 4 people were away.

That’s life. People get sick, have work committments etc.

When there are 100 of you its no big deal, but when there are 11 of you it is very noticeable. We began with a time of corporate worship tonight and all thru it I felt myself disturbed that there were only 7 of us present.

I began to ask ‘Why?…Why does this disturb me?’

I think I was concerned because I wanted to get thru this leadership stuff and move on, but at this rate (and more than likely people will be sick next week too) it will take ages!! Then again… there really is no rush.

At the end of the worship time I asked the group ‘so what now?’

I figure if I’m ‘feeling it’, then I’m not the only one. Sure enough we were all feeling something of the strangeness of the situation.

We discussed how it is important to have as many people there as possible for significant identity forming discussions whereas ‘hang out’ nights are not so critical. In the end we agreed to collate the info from the discussion two weeks previous (not easy as even though there were notes two weeks dents the memory a bit!) and then have the ‘so what’ discussion next week.

On the one hand there’s no rush… but on the other, if we take that approach then we may never get thru this!

I think we are all learning what it means to function as a smaller group. While we’ve all been in ‘small groups’ this is different again.

I imagine Darren, Steve, Phil and Dan have all had experiences of a similar nature where the fragility of a smaller group becomes evident. Would love to hear your insights guys!

Learning, learning, learning…

New Locals

Over the weekend I have bumped into a couple of new faces on the blog scene.
