Here’s a challenging article by Brian McClaren on the movie Hotel Rwanda. It hasn’t made it to Perth yet, but come Feb 24th it will be at the Luna cinema in Leederville so I reckon I reckon I’ll definitely need to drop in and check it out.

Finally Passion-ate
Today I went to see The Passion with a mate.
It has taken me a while, but I never felt up for a Saturday night out watching a bloke have the crap beaten out of him before dying.
It was a pretty affronting movie – less so than I expected (the advantage of hearing so much hype!) but still it impacted me.
My friend (who is ‘Ok with churches and Christians so long as they don’t disturb him’.) found it even more affronting. Despite my pre movie warnings to him, when it was all over we sat there for a few minutes before moving. He was stunned and couldn’t articulate anything of what he felt when we had a coffee afterwards.
For me the parts that captured my imagination were;
– Jesus as a carpenter – an earthy bloke with a good sense of humour – this is how I have often seen him.
– Judas’ post betrayal experiences – I don’t think I ever thought much about what it would have been like to be Judas.
– The scene where Mary sees Jesus fall down the steps witht the weight of the cross and then we flash back to the 4 year old Jesus falling and skinning his knee – he is still someone’s little boy.
– Jesus’ ‘good eye’ – thru the torture he seemed to have one eye that kept a sense of focus while the other was badly bruised. He seemed ‘present’ for the experience.
There were probably others I have forgotten – but for my money I reckon it was sensational. I know many have written critiques of the movie, but as one who simply wanted to experience it, I have to say it was a brilliant movie.
It was interesting seeing it with someone who would not call themselves a Christian and considering how it impacted them. Not sure what to make of it all yet in that regard.free slap shot movie download
Still Haven’t Been…
I still haven’t seen ‘The Passion’.
I missed the free preview because I was running the Forge Intensive – I had intended to go with one of my neighbours but he was flat out busy last week – and now I’m not sure I’ll bother…
I’m already fairly familiar with the story line.
Why the change?…
I guess I’ve just never been a big fan of Jesus movies and this one looks like a particularly difficult one to stomach. I also feel a bit cynical at all the evangelistic hype that has surrounded the movie – with some people seeing it as the kickstart to the next revival.
Before reading the endless stream of reviews I had thought I’d go with some of my neighbours if they were interested – but funnily enough only one has expressed interest. It certainly is’t the talking point of the street at present. And the more reviews I read the less I sense it would be suitable for a person who is not yet a Christian.
Here are two quotes from Brian McClaren’s latest article that echoes some of what I feel. Thanks to Mike for the steer in this direction.
Jesus didn’t say it was by our clever outlines, memorable mnemonics, snazzy programs, and special effects that we would be known as his disciples, or that he would be known as sent from God. Rather, he said, it was by our love that we and he would be known, and by our fruit: our good works that shine in darkness and inspire all to glorify God.
As usual evangelism is never as simple as the next great idea…
I have no doubt the film will strike a chord with some people – but the question McClaren asks is a good one – why do we pin our hopes on some of these things?…
It is Finished
Thank God for Sam!
That’s about all I can say otherwise middle earth would still be a shambles and we’d be coming back for part 4.
Frodo you were a bit of a disapointment mate. You get all the way to the end of the road and you can’t toss the ring!
Sam was the hero – no question.
Yes… I went to see Lord of the Rings III last night. I took a cat nap at about the two hour mark (one of those generic battle scenes) and then struggled thru the final half hour – a very long ending.
Glad its all over and the kiwis can live happily ever after
Surfing for Reconciliation
Ok so I spat the dummy yesterday and couldn’t be bothered writing anything more after I deleted my post!
What I was writing about was my take on the surfing movie Step into Liquid which I went to see with my brother on Tuesday. It was grrrreat!
If you’re not a surfer then it might not grab you, but I loved it. I have often said to people that surf movies are like pornos – you don’t go for the story line and after 10 mins it all get a bit same same!
Not this one… Some highlights were:
* the guy who had surfed every single day of his life for the last 25 years – never missed a beat!
* the quadraplegic surfer whose mates got him back in the water after his accident
* surfing the wake of oil tankers – 2-3 mile rides!
* surfing Cortez bank – 100 miles out to sea
But my favourite was the clip of the Malloy brothers, 4 boys of Irish stock who now live in the US going back to Donegal to find some waves. Apart from seeing some great surf in my homeland of Ireland, I was inspired to see these guys using surfing as a way to help foster healthy relationships between Protestants and Catholics.
They ran a surf camp and invited young people from both sides of the divide to attend. They discovered that when you put them in the water and get them surfing, religious (or political) orientation soon doesn’t matter and we all become ‘just people’. I loved seeing the power of surfing to heal what politicians can’t – and probably never will.
The classic quote from the movie was by Gerry Lopez – long time Pipeline master who said “surfing is for life – the first 20 years are just to see if you are really interested!”
Its been 30 years for me now so I guess I qualify…
I do remember my first experience of surf though – the addictive adrenalin rush that I haven’t been able to shake – better than a 200 m drive on the 18th hole!
Above is a pic of me at one of my favourite breaks, a place called Rocky Point – that was a niiice day!
But as the Billabong add says ‘only a surfer knows the feeling’

LOTR
I eventually watched the first episode of Lord of the Rings last night while the family were away.
Frankly… I found it hard to follow and difficult to know who was connected to who etc. Maybe it is just me.. Fantasy has never been a big attraction for me.
Over the next few days I’ll watch part II and if I get into it I’ll go see part III on the big screen.
I sense the ‘epic’ nature of the film, but I found the storyline hard to follow.
Bruce Pathetic
I finally got to watch Bruce Almighty last night. Dumb, weak and boring are words that come to mind. I had hoped it would be much more engaging than that!…
