“The only reason a great many American families don’t own an elephant is that they have never been offered an elephant for a dollar down and easy weekly payments.”
just discussing this post with mark moore over here in dallas. indeed just posted on my blog about the huge land of shopportunity that is the US. however before we get too self righteous in our neck of the woods let’s rephrase it to reflect our own situation:
the reason many Brits/Aussies don’t own an elephant is that the catalogue company won’t ship one over to us. Guess that’s where the issue of covetousness comes in: unfettered, unfulfilled desires are no more noble than unfettered, fulfilled ones. That all comes with the territory of having a God who looks at the heart.
I was offered a job selling harley davidsons years back. The guy said, “look, selling hogs is easy, you just get the guy to pick the one he likes, and have him sit on it, the bike is sold, you just have to figure out how to get the financing done”
I said no to the job. Bummer, I coulda been very blessed by the Lord.
I’ve had a few offers from the private sector – some at double my current public service income (which is not bad anyway) but I reckon you have to draw the line somewhere and since most of these jobs would have involved be selling my skills back to the government as a ‘contractor’ or ‘business advisor’ Sometimes its just another ‘product’ that no one really needs.

The only reason Aussies don’t own an elephant is because the Yanks haven’t bought them yet!
Once they start buying them we’ll be right there with them… sadly 🙂
Hamo,
You are right. Being a Brit living in the US it is always interesting to see trends emerge here that are then adopted in other places
“What would you need with jousting sticks?”
“Well if you can get ’em for half price it’s a bargain!”
