Has Another Pendulum Just Cracked the Ceiling?

As people we seem to do a good job of reacting to the absence of something with its excess and vice versa.

You may have heard of the Relevant church in Florida with the ’30 Day Sex challenge”. (ie you get the leg over every day for 30 days) As a teenager I think that would have been my idea of heaven. As a 44 year old married bloke with kids the world looks a bit different… I’m not sure I want to have sex as mandatory. Then it would become like washing the dishes… well you get the idea 🙂 Still if you’re going to pick an activity to be excessive about, it sounds like a lot more fun that 30 days of tithing.

Anyway here’s a link to the discussion going on around this topic.

One of the commenters quoted C.S. Lewis and summed it up well “Satan does not care which extreme you pick, as long as you pick one.”

What really worries me is when the pendulum swings back and we have “30 days of abstinence”….

Not in my church…

  1. Well, I know we’re still probably counted as “newly-weds” (just past 6 months now), but I’m pretty sure we have sex more often than we wash the dishes. But – that’s not exactly got to do with how much we have sex

  2. Have you heard that thing about the jar of coins?

They reckon that, if you put a dollar in a dollar in a jar every time you have sex in your first year of marriage… and then, after a year, start taking a dollar OUT every time you have sex, it will take you the rest of your life to empty the jar again…

So maybe the dishes will get done sooner than you imagined!

  3. If God laid it upon the hearts of those church leaders to throw down such a gauntlet and the people felt a conviction to take it up mighty things are bound to happen in the lives of those believers!

  4. Seems to be an awful lot of garbage coming out of Florida at the moment, well if nothing else they will probably make millions from book sales as anything with the word Sex in it always attracts people, I guess theres another notch in the belt of the Christian marketing business.

I wonder if Jesus would have read it……

  5. I don’t see anything wrong with it if that particular body of Christ feels comfortable with it. I may be wrong but it doesn’t seem to go against Biblical truth does it? Sexuality is a gift from God. Our sinful human natures turn it into something ugly, trashy, and nasty. The word “sex” carries different meaning for different people….like the word “bastard”….the words seek to describe a reality that we experience in community in a effort to share with one another.

  6. That comment from travis puts some very odd pictures into my mind. Oven or microwave…

Oven = big, hot and traditional and can use a variety of fuels. Can be sweaty if you spend a lot of time over it.

Microwave = small, cool and modern but can’t work without an electricity supply. Makes your molecules move very fast while you stay cool on the outside.
